I’m here to interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you a post on the heels of some amazing news…
Now, if that news wasn’t the most important thing to happen in your life last week, you are LYING to yourself. Although to be fair, I’d be lying to myself if I didn’t admit I’m a wee bit nervous to see what this revival becomes. Gilmore Girls is such a wonderful world and even though we didn’t get the ending show-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino dreamed of, seasons 1-6 of were magical. However, I want to put my doubts aside because I truly believe in my teeny tiny heart ASP wouldn’t dare revive the beloved characters and stories of Stars Hollow if she didn’t have a way to preserve that magic.
Gilmore Girls is one of those really unique shows that has managed to stand the test of time despite it’s humble beginnings. It has amassed an amazing, vocal fan base and after it’s recent Netflix resurgence, we got to see how big and passionate that fan base truly is. Out of all my friends, I believe I was the only one who watched the show, so I assumed that like myself, us fans were anomalies. Clearly, we aren’t. So to all my friends who made fun of me for watching so fanatically and religiously: SUCK IT.
As soon as Netflix announced Gilmore Girls was available for streaming I promptly deleted my DVR series record of the show on ABC Family and binged watched the HECK outta my favorite episodes. It was one of the happiest times of my life… Fast forward to sometime in the not so distant past, a little festival called ATX took place in Austin, Texas. Here, the entire cast of Gilmore Girls reunited with showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Dan Palladino (sans Melisssa McCathy, damnit Ghostbusters). Because I am unbelievably unfortunate to live in dumb California, thousands of miles away from Texas, I had to do some of my best twitter trolling to try and find some juicy tidbits from the panel at ATX. It was then I stumbled across the Gilmore Guys. Two dudes… yes, real dudes with real male parts (I am simply making assumptions here), who “go deep into Gilmore Girls episode by episode with special guests to analyze, praise, mock and gab like gals about all things Stars Hollow and beyond. Seriously, these dudes are SUPER into Gilmore Girls.” And that, my friends is a direct quote from their iTunes feed.
Now ladies, whether Gilmore Girls is your favorite thing on television, or you love some other dumb show, is it not a self-indulgent fantasy of yours to find a man who will sit down and have a funny but charmingly insightful conversation with you about said show?
Are you aggressively nodding your head yes? I know. Same. Well, the Gilmore Guys do just that. Let’s start with a little background on the hosts:
Besides being a long-time Gilly, Kevin has some pretty impressive video-editing skills (Sorkinisms, anyone?), or perhaps you’d be more impressed by his overwhelming affection for Bruce Springsteen (#relatable). In my opinion, he is actually an undercover T.V. savant because this dude can recall the most infinitesimal, detailed facts about T.V. shows he’s seen. I mean honestly, I’ve never heard any one person be able to place a moment or line from a show with its exact episode, i.e.“yep that was from Season 4, episode 12, act 3, written by Tookie Clothespin.” (Fictitious example but I’m positive it gets my point across). Kevin’s infectious enthusiasm for the podcast and Gilmore in general is a joy to listen to. And his puns… incomparable.
Demi is the Gilly newbie with a flawless Frank Underwood impression of the
Podcast duo but, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge his impressive resume. He’s a writer, makes Vines that are actually funny/ not wildly offensive, and an A+ twitter feed which, P.S. if you think I’m mentioning that to be sarcastic, I’m not. He recently tweeted out a script he wrote after Drake announced it was time to get back into acting and it was 100% comedy gold. I believe it is already in pre-production but I may be making that up. I’m sure its quite obvious that Demi is hilarious but he often provides some really grounded and insightful feedback, especially for a first time watcher of the show. And his reactions to Kevin’s puns… perfection.
These two make up a great team, and if you want me to explain why, I can’t. I have no idea why two dudes ‘bro-ing out’ over Gilmore Girls is so hilarious and charming… but it totally is. It’s exciting to hear Demi (who is watching the show for the first time) react to the show because seeing it for the first time is not something I’ll ever be able to experience again. They dive into each episode talking about everything from the pop-culture references to the fashion on the show. And while I love hearing their confusion over ‘decorative’ scarves, these two are really at their best when discussing the plot, relationships and direction of the show. They’ve also done some wonderful interviews with the cast and crew which have been such a treat to listen to.
Now, if you haven’t seen Gilmore Girls, I’m personally offended and I hope you will right your wrongs by dropping everything and starting season 1 now. If you love the show, or even just like it… or maybe you even hate it, whatever boat you’re in- the Gilmore Guys will entertain you. And if you’re like me, anxiously awaiting for Netflix to drop those new episodes, I guarantee this is the best thing to experience in the interim. I really recommend starting with season 1, episode 1 of the podcast. While their show is easy to follow even if you don’t listen to it chronologically (as opposed to a podcast like Comedy Bang Bang, where you’ll find yourself lost in a dark abyss of confusing bits if you try and pick a random episode), I strongly urge you to listen from the beginning. Not only is each episode fantastic, but much like wine, it gets better as it ages.
If you don’t believe me (understandable, I’m incredibly untrustworthy) check out some of my favorite episodes and let the guys convince you themselves: 1.08 & 4.07 with guest Jamie Woodham, 2.05 with guest Ben Rodgers (apparently this isn’t a popular episode but I died of laughter so…), 2.12 with guest Patrick Walsh, 3.07 & 4.22 with guest Jason Mantzoukas, and Gilmail Guys Vol. 4 which ends with a listener presenting her Gilmore Guys themed song to the tune of American Pie and my brain exploded because it was so cool!
This is truly a delightful podcast that brings me so much joy while locked up in my cubicle, sitting in hours of traffic or suffering at the gym. Beyond the show itself, Kevin and Demi have turned me on to some great comedians and other podcasts (yay comedy!!). One day I will get my booty to the UCB-LA to see their show and some of the other amazing shows (featuring friends/guests of the Gilmore Guys) happening there! Now go on, give them a listen, I swear you won’t be disappointed!
